On the last Friday of every month, the V&A (Victoria & Albert Museum) holds Friday Late, billed as “the original contemporary late night event.” Each evening features live performances and one-off installations. For a Valentine’s Day V&A Late, we created a three-sided monolith, asking visitors to “reflect on romance” or “deliberate on destiny.” Colored acrylic panels were screen printed with opaque silver ink. When visitors wrote on the surface—essentially scratching away the ink—it allowed the interior light to come through the writing, to dramatic effect. One comment would spark a response from another, and the handwriting became the substance of the exhibit.
