Myrtle Edwards & Centennial Parks

Building on the success of our work for Seattle’s downtown waterfront, we were commissioned to create wayfinding and interpretation for a project that extends the waterfront revitalization northward along the water’s edge. The $45 million public-private partnership adds 16 acres of restored parks and public space.

Despite its spectacular views, the site—which connects multiple parks—lacked a clear sense of identity, functioning more often as a route through than a destination. Tucked between Elliott Bay and the railway tracks, the unusually skinny footprint called for an unusually skinny map, which highlights new amenities. The heads-up map (always oriented to where the user is looking) provides intuitive and accessible navigation.

Working with local experts HistoryLink, we designed stories for viewpoints along the trail. Visitors can discover the hidden workings of the grain terminal, learn how underwater net pens help raise and release one million young salmon into Puget Sound each year, and explore the science behind the kelp forests beneath the bay. Together, these stories encourage people to look beyond the scenery and connect with the area’s rich ecology, industry, and history.

Our work now spans more than 50 acres of connected parks and public spaces along the water’s edge. From Pioneer Square through downtown, to Olympic Sculpture Park, and now Elliott Bay Connections, there’s a wealth of stories to be discovered (and you won’t get lost!). We’re proud to have contributed to Seattle’s remarkable waterfront transformation.
