As The Center for the Arts in Jackson Hole approached its 20th anniversary, they came to us asking for a better sign system. After our in-depth site assessment, that scope evolved into a three-part challenge:
Getting people where they need to go.The Center’s 78,000-square-foot campus was deliberately designed to be porous — welcoming visitors from every direction. While that openness encouraged exploration, it had created chronic wayfinding problems, especially for first-time visitors trying to find one of the many arts organizations housed on site. We addressed this with a cohesive interior and exterior signage system, a new banner and display program, a clear campus map, and a full replacement of the old disjointed signs with intuitive, easy-to-read ones.
Clarifying who’s who.The Center is a nonprofit that provides an affordable, vital home for arts organizations from across the region. But with so many resident groups under one roof, distinguishing their programming from The Center’s own had become confusing. Our new system strengthened CAJ’s umbrella identity while also making sure each tenant felt visible and celebrated.
Refreshing a beloved brand. The Center’s brand carried real equity — they wanted to keep their recognizable CAJ green and core typeface — so we focused on bringing it forward rather than starting over. The refresh introduced contemporary, friendly treatments and expanded applications, including new bilingual elements.
We also worked closely with The Center team and their resident stakeholders to rethink key spaces entirely. In the main lobby, an oversized and outdated reception desk gave way to a welcoming mini visitor center — a place where guests are oriented, introduced to all of the resident organizations, and sent off in the right direction. The resulting system is built to grow and flex as The Center moves into its next 20 years.
