Marking the Original Shoreline in Seattle’s Historic Pioneer Square
April 19, 2024
You are standing where land once met water.
Did you know that, before settlers filled in and built out the waterfront, the natural shoreline wound right through Seattle’s Pioneer Square district? A lagoon full of flounder once occupied what is now Occidental Square. As part of recent streetscape improvements, we have been collaborating with landscape architects MIG on the creation of Shoreline Alley, to mark and interpret the original shoreline, which happens to run along a modern-day alley. Take a stroll through Shoreline Alley and imagine what used to be. Coming soon: etched planter beds and interpretive panels, to help complete the story.
